Where to stay in Ibiza: areas, hotels, villas and agroturismos

In Ibiza, where you sleep decides almost everything else: whether you need a car, how much noise there will be at night, which beaches you can walk to and how much you will spend on taxis. The island looks small on the map, but in August a short drive can turn into an hour in traffic, so choose the area before the hotel.

Broadly speaking, Ibiza Town and Playa d'en Bossa suit people who want everything close and plan to use the bus; San Antonio is for sunsets and a young crowd; Santa Eulalia and the east coast are for families and quiet; and the north, the west and the interior are for switching off, with a car.

This section has four guides:

Two things apply to any kind of stay. First, the tourist tax: it is paid on top, per person and per night, and we explain it in the Ibiza tourist tax. Second, legality: only homes listed on the Consell's tourism register can be rented to holidaymakers, and flats in apartment blocks are not allowed. If an August deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best area to stay in Ibiza for a first visit?

Ibiza Town, because it puts Dalt Vila, restaurants, the Formentera ferries and most bus routes within reach, with the big clubs a short ride away. For peace and quiet, Santa Eulalia; for nights out, Playa d'en Bossa or San Antonio. In the north and the west you will need a car.

Is it legal to rent a holiday flat in Ibiza?

Not in a block of flats: holiday lets in multi-unit residential buildings are not permitted in Ibiza. Only homes on the Consell's tourism register can be rented to tourists, mostly detached houses, and the listing must show the registration number. Licensed tourist apartment complexes are a separate, legal category.
