Ibiza in September: the same island, with room to breathe

Ask people who live here which month they would choose to visit, and a surprising number say September. The heat softens, the sea is still warm, the August crowds go home and the island gets its manners back — and the clubs are still open, building up to their closing parties. It is the same Ibiza with more space in it, and it rewards people who plan it slightly differently.

The weather and the sea in September

September in Ibiza is still summer. Daytime temperatures usually sit in the mid to high twenties, nights are warm enough for a T-shirt, and the sea, after a whole summer of heating up, is about as warm as it gets all year. What changes is the light: in Sant Antoni the sun sets at around 20:25 at the start of the month and around 19:40 by the end, so evenings come earlier and a little cooler.

The one thing to keep an eye on is the forecast. Late September is when the first autumn storms tend to appear in the Balearics: usually a heavy downpour and a grey day, then summer again. Leave the boat trip and the long hike with a bit of flexibility and you lose nothing.

Fewer crowds: what actually changes

Once the school holidays end across Europe, the island empties noticeably. Not overnight, but enough to feel it where it matters:

• Beaches. The famous coves that were full by eleven in August have space again, especially on weekdays, and parking near them stops being a morning sport.
• Restaurants. Tables you could not get in August become a same-day phone call. Ask for the terrace.
• Prices. Accommodation and car hire are usually cheaper than in August, and they tend to drop further as October gets closer.

Beaches and calas to save for September

This is the month for the beaches everyone skips in August because they are packed. A few that are especially good now:

• Cala Comte and Cala Bassa, on the west coast. Shallow turquoise water and some of the best sunsets on the island. Go late in the afternoon and stay for the light.
• Ses Salines and Es Cavallet, in the south. Both inside the Ses Salines natural park: long sand, dunes and salt flats behind. Ses Salines has the beach-bar atmosphere; Es Cavallet is calmer.
• Cala Xarraca and Portinatx, in the north. Greener, quieter and good for snorkelling when the sea is flat.
• Formentera, 30 to 40 minutes by ferry from Ibiza port. Ses Illetes is the beach everyone photographs, and in September you can actually find a spot on it.

Sunsets, markets and the old town

Some of the best things to do in Ibiza in September cost little or nothing. The sunset is the obvious one: the Sunset Strip in Sant Antoni, around Café del Mar and Café Mambo, is the classic, and the beach at Cala d'Hort, right in front of Es Vedrà, is the one people remember. Get to either early; even now the good spots go first. Around Cala d'Hort, parking and the paths to the clifftop viewpoints have been closed or restricted for much of this season, so check before you drive there.

The hippy markets are still on: Las Dalias in Sant Carles on Saturdays and Punta Arabí in Es Canar on Wednesdays, half shopping and half social outing. And the cooler evenings are perfect for walking up through Dalt Vila, the walled old town of Ibiza and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then having dinner in the streets below.

Practical tips before you go

• Book the closing parties early. The last parties of the season are the ones that sell out, and they often get more expensive as the date gets closer. We keep the dates in our closing parties calendar.
• Check what is still running. Beach bars, boat trips and bus routes work to summer timetables that thin out during October.
• Sort out transport. A hire car or a scooter is the easiest way to reach the coves. For nights out, share the ride: in Ibiza Connects people going to the same place offer and ask for seats.
• Pack a light layer, and keep the sun cream. The sun is still strong at midday, but a boat back at dusk or the walk home at seven in the morning can feel cool.
